"Management talk": You will be surprised to know how much of your talk with children may actually be given to management talk. This type of talk is mainly about teaching children to comply in an authoritative manner. e.g. "Stop that sit down!". 3a research identifies how this type of talk is not an effective language choice by educators. Talking to children in an authoritative manner can strip a child of building self-esteem and interfere with their ability to regulate their emotions and form healthy relationships as adults. Guilt does not leads to compliance. 3a recommends changing this talk to substitute information talk e.g. "The chair is for sitting". This type of talk instead develops and extends on a particular topic and can form a conversation between the educator and child as to 'why' we don't stand on a chair. Using substitute information talk can provide a more comfortable environment for children to thrive.

These examples provide us a window into the amazing learning that magically happens through intentionality as we take the time to develop relationships with children and enhance their experiences through positive connections. How wonderful to be a part of these children's lived experiences.
